First Night in the Labyrinth

Entering the Forbidden Floor The Hidden Passage William and Adso discover a secret entrance to the library through the ossuary. They climb into the scriptorium and then ascend to the library itself. They find a series of rooms with cryptic inscriptions from the Apocalypse. Disorientation The library is a maze of identical rooms, with mirrors and vision-inducing herbs. They become lost, unable to find their way back. The experience is terrifying, as they encounter distorted reflections and strange sounds. A Glimpse of the Secret They find a room with a lit lamp and a book open to an image of the woman clothed with the sun. Adso inhales the fumes and has a vision. William realizes the library is designed to protect its secrets through psychological and physical traps.

Mapping the Labyrinth

Deciphering the Plan Mathematical Deduction William uses the external structure of the Aedificium to deduce the internal layout. He realizes the library is built on a geometric plan, with rooms arranged according to the countries of the world. The inscriptions are clues to the arrangement. The Alphabet of Rooms Each room has a verse from the Apocalypse, and the initial letters spell out the names of regions: HIBERNIA, YSPANIA, LEONES, etc. The library is a microcosm of the known world, with books organized by origin. The Finis Africae The most secret room, the finis Africae, is located in the south tower, marked by the word LEONES. It is inaccessible through normal passages. William deduces that the entrance is through a mirror room, controlled by a mechanism.

The Secret of the Mirror

Opening the Door The Clue from Adso Adso's dream and his mention of "tertius equi" give William the key. The inscription "Super thronos viginti quatuor" contains the word "quatuor." The first and seventh letters of this word (q and r) are the triggers. Entering the Finis Africae William presses the letters, and the mirror swings open, revealing a hidden room. Inside, they find Jorge of Burgos waiting with the forbidden book. The long search ends in a final confrontation. The Labyrinth's Purpose The library's labyrinth was designed not only to protect books but also to control access to dangerous knowledge. Jorge has used it to guard Aristotle's Poetics for decades. The destruction of the library symbolizes the end of this era of secrecy.
